Your WordPress tip of the day. . .
WordPress core just released an update this past week – 5.5.3 – which is basically a bug patch. And it’s the beginning of the month so, it’s time to do your updates!
Do you know the recommended order for processing updates? It’s ok if not – most people don’t. But there IS a recommended order:
Step 1. Update all themes
Step 2. Update all plugins
Step 3. Update WP core
And of course, BEFORE you start ANY updates, make a backup of your site.
AND if your host offers a plan that includes a staging site, spring for it! You won’t regret it! Staging sites make it so much easier to do updates and redesigns (and trust me, your designer/developer will love you for it).
Do all updates on your staging site and then if all is well, push them to the live site.
If you don’t have a staging option, please please please make a full site backup before you do anything!
I recommend doing updates at least once per month. Add it to your calendar and schedule it in – just like you do for oil changes and tuneups on your car and just like you should do for changing batteries in your house’s smoke alarms, your furnace filters, and dusting, etc. 😉
