From my friend who grew up in Germany

I hated going to school in Germany. For 13 years, we were told that we have no reason to be proud to be German because of what the Nazis did to the world – and most notably the Jews.

We were told that in all subjects: History, German, English, Biology, Geography, History, Social Studies, Economics, Religious Studies. You name it.

Looking back and watching what is happening in my home country right now, I am grateful that I have had this education.

I am grateful for Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s ‘The Vist.’ I am grateful for the education of the importance of the strict separation of church and state. I am grateful for the lessons in humility.
