Did you know that African Americans and Hispanics make up approximately 32% of the US population, yet they comprise 56% of the all incarcerated people?
And that if African Americans and Hispanics were incarcerated at the same rates as whites, the prison and jail populations would decline by almost 40%?
Also, did you know that the majority of people in prison haven’t even been convicted of crime? It’s true. But they’re stuck in prison because they can’t afford bail.
Take Kalief Browder, for instance. He was a 16 year old kid stuck in prison – at Rikers Island – for 3 years because his family couldn’t afford the few hundred dollars they needed to get him out on bail.
And he was INNOCENT.
The justice system in this country is anything but just. It needs reform across the board. And in the meantime, we must seek justice for those wrongly imprisoned.
Because justice is NEVER SERVED by convicting an innocent person.
We have $50 left. Who’s gonna help us get there?
