A couple of days ago, I saw a post here on FB where someone said that being triggered is just ‘code’ for being offended.

No. It’s not.

As someone who has worked with many youth and young adults who’ve experience true trauma, I couldn’t just keep my mouth shut about this.

And as a mom of 2 kiddos who both have serious anxiety, 1 of whom has tried to end their life and spent weeks in Children’s Hospital after one attempt, I refuse to keep my mouth shut about this.

Being triggered comes from trauma. It has little, if anything, to do with being offended.

Being offended comes from taking things personally and/or being closed-minded.

And sometimes being offended comes from something that is truly offensive – like racial slurs, for example.

The bottom line is: being triggered and being offended are two radically different things.

Being triggered is not code for being offended.

That is all.

  1. No, it’s not, you’re so on point. Thanks for clarifying. I think taking offense is an ego response. Triggered comes from trauma, deep meaning, vulnerability, accepting, healing. Could keep going.
